Regardless of whether you’re crossing oceans and international borders or just going over the nearest state line, make sure you know your destination. Rules, laws and customs can be very different to those at home and having a vacation disaster because you unwittingly broke a rule is never good.
Some of my favourite travel research happened before my trip to Bruges. I absolutely loved getting to know the city's history before my visit - and doing a little chocolate related reading wasn't an unpleasant way to pass some time as well!
Stick To A Budget
When people ask me where I've found it easiest to stay on budget, they're always surprised when I say Las Vegas. No, really! Yes, there's plenty of temptation in Sin City, but it's also really easy to save as well. There are coupons and deals a'plenty, plus tons of competition among hotels and restaurants which keeps prices low for those who are willing to do a bit of digging.

The fantastic thing about Costa Rica is that Canadians have virtually no jet lag, as we're traveling north to south instead of east to west. You don't always have to cross an ocean to feel magically transported into another world! And as soon as you arrive, you can start to enjoy your vacation experience immediately.
