How do you make travel memories?Today, I heard some sad health news about someone who I regard very highly. It made me think about how life can be very short and unpredictable. And it made me think of some awesome random travel memories that I wanted to share. In no particular order… 1.) My first hour in Africa. Landing in Lilongwe, taking a very bumpy route to the Bunda Agriculture College. So hard to describe, but it was absolutely the most vivid, most real, most in the moment hour of my life. Passion and fear, passion and fear. Every sense in overdrive. Nothing unremarkable – yet the most unbelievable hour of my life. 2.) Arriving at Amsterdam Central Station after dark on the first day of my first solo trip. Convinced that the Dutch mafia would be after me, I swiftly slunk to my hostel with my heart pounding in my throat. I think if you ever lose that fear, you’re done for. Being a little bit scared is a good thing. 3.) My first trip to Oahu, Hawaii – the look on my husband’s face when we landed and disembarked at the open air airport. Within 10 minutes we said “We’re coming back here – Maui 2012.” And guess what – we did. Which leads to… 3A) – Snorkeling in Haunama Bay. So beautiful! Such incredible underwater wildlife -include a sea turtle! Who cares that I developed sea sickness. Yep. I can get motion sickness while swimming. Go me! This really set the stage for a passion for all things aquatic, all around the world. If you're looking for some sensational snorkel and dive inspiration, you'll love these incredible pics and stories from the coast of Egypt. Yes, Egypt has amazing diving - who knew? ![]() 4.) Travelling through England with my mother and eating peach bread pudding at Cafe Concerto in York. I loved the incredible buildings and city layout. So much history and atmosphere! And bread pudding! Did I mention the bread pudding. 5.) Running the Paris marathon in 2006. The pain – of my god, the pain. But totally worth it. No one can take a marathon away from you. And in Paris – best location ever! I’m hoping all of you have a day filled with great travel memories! Looking for more travel inspiration? Thank you! I have to say, once was enough for the marathon, but Hawaii is something I can't get enough of!
