When I picture the ultimate escape, I think of water.
I’m a confirmed water baby. Growing up on Cape Breton Island, I spent my childhood summers at the beach, collecting sand dollars and sea glass, jumping off the wharf, eating ice cream, and battling jelly fish (who top the list of my mortal enemies).
I don’t think I’ve ever owned a “cute” swimsuit in my life. With my sensible black Speedo tank suits, I’ve put myself through 6 years of university, teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding. I’ll join in aquafit class with the Golden Oldies at any YMCA. I’ve been snorkeling in Cape MacClear in Malawi, Hanauma Bay in Oahu, and Molokini Crater in Maui. I’ve never hesitated to dive right into the waves and have a blast!
Ottawa at dusk
From the roof of our old apartment building in downtown Ottawa, overlooking the Museum of Nature, a full moon had risen as the sun was just about to disappear. The setting sun on the other side of the sky lit up apartment buildings like Christmas trees, resulting in this image. Sometimes a sunset is more amazing when you're looking in the other direction.
I absolutely love sunflowers. These ones grew last summer in our backyard. When they reach full size, they could be as tall as 14 feet. Their stalks get as big as my forearm, and really do live up to their nickname: Kong Sunflower.

Hammock at the campground
Who's a cute little lizard? We found this guy hanging out in the Arizona desert as we toured Navajo ruins on a blisteringly hot August afternoon.
