Here are 5 posts that have inspired me, moved me, and motivated me this year.
I'm always amazed at the remarkable talent that exists in the blogging world. For me, it's nearly impossible to pinpoint my favourite sites or favourite writers, but for the second year in a row, I want to share some of the blog posts that I've discovered and fallen in love with in the past year. They're all fantastic reading and I hope they inspire you as much as they inspire me!
How Travel Almost Killed Me by AmandaElsewhere.com
The old saying goes that you don't know what you've got till it's gone. Amanda from AmandaElsewhere.com faced the fight of her life when confronted with a terrifying medical situation. With her health, her future, and the chance of future travel in doubt, Amanda takes a hard look at what makes us happy, why travel is so fulfilling, and what happens when your life turns upside down. The fact that she does it all with a sense of humor intact is remarkable and her post makes for a fantastic read.
An Island So Hard To Leave by SurfingThePlanet.com
Have you ever heard of the tropical island paradise of Perhentian in Malaysia? Me neither, until I read this post by Surfing The Planet. Yes, the photos are beautiful but there's more to Perhentian than just the gorgeous beaches and sunsets. What really made me take notice was the complete sense of relaxation that I felt through the post. I challenge you to read it and not feel like you've had a mini vacation yourself! This is one place that is now at the top of my travel list.
Fat In A Bikini: The South Beach Experiment by SuitcaseScholar.com
I thought I had been to some intimidating fashion capitals, like New York, Paris, and Sydney, but there's nothing like the string bikini mecca of South Beach. I'm an ocean loving gal but I don't know if I'd ever have enough moxie to take on a visit to what must be one of the chicest beaches in the world. However, Tracy from The Suitcase Scholar not only has the required pluck to do it - in a bikini! - but also the nerve to write about it. This is a fantastic reminder that sometimes the most intimidating travel situations aren't about culture shock, language barriers, or enormous slimy bugs. Travel can make you confront all kinds of limitations, including the ones you place on yourself, and Tracy shows how to confront things head on.
The Magic of Modena by HeckticTravels.com
25 year old balsamic vinegar, local Parmesan cheese, irresistible gelato.... yep, I'm hooked! And I'm not the only one. Modena may get far less attention than Italy's more famous cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice but it turned out to be one of the favourite stops for blogger Dalene and Pete's nephew - and I think you'll love it too! Any city with a food scene so incredible that it gets an 18 year old boy to eat slowly is definitely worth checking out. Add in gorgeous street scapes, lazy days at the cafes, and you'll hardly even notice a little local car company known as Ferrari.
Should You Stop Dyeing Your Hair to Win More Travel by AroundTheWorldL.com
I wish more than anything that everyone had the means and ability to travel but the reality is that is often not the case. It's rather annoying when some people profess that 'anyone' can travel if they really wanted to, if only they just re-prioritized. The truth is that it's rarely so simple. That's why I loved this post from Lillie. She writes about how she came to the decision to stop dying her hair as a young woman. In showing what that means for her life, she frames it in an interesting way, adding up all the money could save in a single year. Boom! Trip to Puerto Rico! It was an eye opening article for me and got me thinking of my own hair. But more than that, it is a rare example of a useful and inspiring "If you really want to travel would you be willing to give up X" article. It is a unique look at frugality, budget travel, and shifting priorities; a fantastic read as you're making some New Year's resolutions.
Happy New Year!!!
I hope you find as much inspiration in these 5 remarkable bloggers as I do and I hope the New Year is filled wish as much travel as your heart desires!
