Welcome to the next installment in our "Save, Splurge, Steal" interview series. Getting great value when I travel is always such a fun challenge for me and I love to learn how other people get the best possible experience for their available time and money. I'm asking top travel bloggers to share their expertise and I hope you enjoy their responses as much as I do!
Meet Rachel and Mike from TreePot Travels!
TreePot Travels is about a young American couple who are ditching the “suggested path” in life and walking down a trail of their own freewill. Their goal is to share their experiences through the lens, one picture at a time. Rachel and Mike's next adventure- road tripping it across North America!
1.) How do you save money in order to travel?
"The last two and a half years we have lived right outside of Key West, FL. This area is extremely expensive and the rents prices are faint worthy. We decided to forgo renting a nice house and instead have been living in a mobile home. We also have a food budget and only get the foods that we need for planned meals. This has allowed us to save money while still eating healthy. Another way we have saved money is by using Tracfones (pay as you go) instead of a high monthly cell phone contract and we don't have a TV!"
2.) Everyone needs to splurge now and then – describe a time when you blew your budget and it was worth every penny.
"The only time we splurge is when buying camera equipment and parts for our truck. We are not generally into possessions but these things are extremely important to us. My hobby is photography, if I don't keep getting better lenses as I progress, then I'll be stuck in a photo rut! Mike is converting our Diesel truck into a home, if we don't splurge and get the good parts then we might just end up stuck out in the middle of nowhere, which could or could not be a good thing. :)"
3) There’s nothing like a bargain – name your favourite great steal of a deal?
"Bargains!! Who doesn't love them? I go crazy when I see good two for one deals on food! I start running around like a kid who just had their first taste of sugar. It is one of the best concepts ever invented. "
4.) What tips do you have for a traveler to get the best value for their money?
"Before traveling, one of the best ways to get a good deal is to buy your equipment during big sales. It's so easy to get raved up and just start buying everything that you 'think' you need. It's best to research everything first and then wait for a sale if you have enough time before your departure date. While you're traveling, wait till you are at your destination to find a place to stay. We have always gotten the best prices by simply showing up. Don't do this if you are arriving in a new place at night, then it is much better to just spend the money and book a place early."
5.) Time is valuable too – how do you make every moment count?
"Easy! By simply stopping and looking around you. Move slowly when you travel and keep your eyes open. I've found this to be the best way to experience a new place. I also take lots of pictures. This allows me to enjoy a place more because I'm involving my hobby in everything I do and also guarantees that when my memory fails me, I'll have a picture instead."
