Have you ever seen those top 10 lists that show all the gadgets and devices your phone has replaced; all the things that travelers used to carry along but are now obsolete thanks to the development of smart phone technology? Guide books, video cameras, flashlights, calculators - they're are all slowly slipping away and there's times when I wonder how I managed to ever travel without my phone.
But there's one thing I have never really used my phone for while I travel and that's making online bookings. So when HostelWorld challenged me to check out their new app, I was eager to check it out and see it I could be converted. I can't say exactly why I haven't used my phone to do online bookings but I think on some level I worried about not being able to easily input information on smaller screens as well as not having full access to all the information that I'd want on a regular website.
I'm happy to report that I found the app easy to use and comprehensive. My favourite thing is that, adjacent to each property listing, there is a number indicating the percentage of guests who would recommend staying there - a nice and easy way to get a feel for a place without having to sort through all the reviews. I also liked that there was an option to take a photo of your credit card and scan the information in - much easier than trying to type accurately on a tiny screen!!!
I felt the app worked well enough and gave me enough confidence that I would use it to book my accommodations while on the road. It's the perfect booking system for people who travel ultra-lite and who make their plans spontaneously.
But I must confess that I will still do some bookings from the regular website from home as well - I like having several windows open to check out maps, photos, and transit schedules all at the same time. This might have a bit more to do with my compulsive need to learn everything about everywhere I'm going far before I ever go there than actually getting necessary information!
If you have an android phone, you can get the app for FREE here! It's a great tool for both the road tripper and the weekend warrior and I think you'll like it as much as me.
Thanks to HostelWorld for giving me the chance to do this sponsored review. As always, all opinions are my own.
