Looking for fun things to do in winter in Edmonton? Here’s how to make the most of snowy days, chilly nights, and everything in between. Edmonton knows how to do winter. Whether it’s bundling up for an outdoor skate or tucking into a warm pastry, this is a city that embraces the season with heart and charm. During my chilly stay, I discovered art, comfort food, quirky museums, and unforgettable moments under the stars—both literally and figuratively. Here are some of my favourite ways to enjoy the city when the temperature drops Visit the Royal Alberta Museum I love a museum that surprises you. The Royal Alberta Museum, the largest of its kind in Western Canada, is home to everything from ancient Indigenous artifacts to vintage kitchenware. It’s a fascinating mix of history and culture—and a wonderful way to spend a snowy afternoon. Feed Your Curiosity at TELUS World of Science Whether you're traveling with curious kids or you’re just a curious adult (hi, it’s me), the TELUS World of Science has plenty to explore. There’s everything from hands-on exhibits and an Arctic zone to an impressive planetarium and IMAX theatre. I stopped expecting to spend an hour and ended up staying all morning. Discover Indigenous Art—and Incredible Bannock A small but powerful gem, the Whiskeyjack Art House showcases Indigenous artwork, handmade goods, and seasonal pop-up meals. I had a warm bowl of stew with freshly made bannock during my visit and it was the definition of comfort food. If you’re looking for a meaningful local experience that feels off the beaten path, this is it. Take a Tour of Alberta’s Legislature Edmonton is Alberta’s capital, and that means it’s home to some stately sights—including the provincial legislature. Free weekend tours offer a peek into the history and architecture of the building, while the grounds turn into a mini winter wonderland with lights and skating when the season’s right. Explore the Art Gallery of Alberta With its curving metal facade and contemporary Canadian collections, the Art Gallery of Alberta is one of the city’s most striking buildings. On weekends, free public tours add extra insight into the pieces on display. It’s a beautiful way to spend an hour or two warming up indoors. Eat Like a Local: Green Onion Cakes Every city has that one dish locals swear by. In Edmonton, it’s green onion cakes—warm, savoury, and completely addictive. The man behind the magic is Siu To, known around town simply as the Green Onion Cake Man. That’s the name of his restaurant too! His story is as beloved as his food, and I was lucky enough to meet him during my trip. These pancakes are best enjoyed with a dash of soy or chili sauce… and zero shame about going back for seconds. Browse the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market
You’ll find green onion cakes here too, along with local produce, gourmet doughnuts, and homemade treats. On my visit, I picked up a few frozen goods to tuck into later and seriously considered a second breakfast from one of the market vendors. A short walk away is Pip, a cosy little brunch spot that serves a dreamy mushroom toast and a solid oat milk latte. Take a Segway (Yes, Really!) Through the River Valley I never thought I’d say this, but snow-covered forest trails are the perfect place to learn how to ride a Segway. The River Valley Adventure Company runs guided tours through Edmonton’s urban park system, and it ended up being one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done in the city. At night, with fairy lights strung along the trail and snow crunching underfoot, it felt like something out of a storybook. If I can do it, so can you. Sip Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont On weekends, the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald hosts an elegant afternoon tea service that feels like a scene from a classic novel. The finger sandwiches, tiny pastries, and honey scones are all delightful, but it was the Lady Agnes tea—a floral blend named after the hotel’s namesake—that really won me over. Catch a Hockey Game Edmontonians are passionate about hockey, and there’s no better place to feel that energy than at an Oilers game in the downtown ICE District. Between the roaring crowd and the snow-dusted outdoor rink nearby, it’s a perfect blend of big city fun and hometown warmth. Don’t Skip the Duchess Ask anyone where to get a treat in Edmonton, and they’ll probably say Duchess Bake Shop. This charming bakery serves French-inspired pastries, but they also sell beautiful baking ingredients that make great souvenirs. It’s the kind of place where you walk in for a snack and stay for an hour, browsing and buying treats. Winter in Edmonton is filled with cozy corners, outdoor adventures, and unexpected moments of joy. Whether you’re skating under the stars, sipping tea in a historic hotel, or devouring a green onion cake, the city has a way of making the cold feel warm.
