Evening dinner tours of Bangkok's biggest river are popular - but do they represent good value?
What do you get when you mix ancient Buddhist temples, a huge pan of lasagna, and Psy? Why, a night on a Bangkok river cruise, of course! As we discovered firsthand, a Bangkok river cruise on the Chao Phraya River tour takes several classic Thai experiences, throws in a bit of contemporary fun, and leaves you thoroughly entertained - and sometimes a bit baffled too.
What could be better than cycling by canals and cobblestones?
There is perhaps no image of Europe more romantic and relaxing than that of a gentle bike trip across charming, cobblestone streets. Unless you're an anti-adventurist, that is! Your inner chicken will be cringing with every turn, fretting the buses, the cars, even your fellow cyclists. But Amsterdam is a cycling dream, even for those of us who are entirely less adventurous in their travel style. Here's how to survive and thrive while biking in Amsterdam.
There's a delicious, diverse food scene to discover in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a fantastic, diverse, delicious food scene and there is something for every taste and price point. In just a few days we must have consumed our own body weight in goodies several times over. No shame, no problem! Here are four of our favourite places to eat, drink, and be merry. Don't consider it a comprehensive list or a 'best of' description - these are simply spots we loved and we think you'll love them too.
I love tiny places - but will my stomach love being on a houseboat? And it's not just any houseboat. It's the Amsterdam Houseboat Museum!
I am absolutely obsessed with tiny places and spaces with plenty of hidden nooks and crannies. Folding camping gear, hidden drawers in RVs, nifty gadgets for organizing luggage - these are just a few of my favourite things! So it only made sense that I visited Amsterdam's Houseboat Museum at Prinsengracht 296K. Visiting a houseboat is like the Disneyworld of organization and I couldn't wait to check out how every square foot of space is used to the max.
There was just one problem. Exactly how would my notorious seasickness fare on a houseboat?
There are a lot of cheap hotels in Amsterdam - but what if you just want value? Our top Amsterdam accommodation choice balances cost and quality.
Amsterdam is filled with accommodation choices. There's every kind of hostel imaginable, from church-administered institutions to some of the wildest, most legendary properties on the backpackers' trail. There's gorgeous boutique hotels, major brand name chains, traditional bed and breakfasts, and even farm stays outside the city. And, of course, there are a lot of forgettable, cheap hotels in Amsterdam. But what we were looking for could be summed up in one word: value.
When bedded down at the Nova Hotel, I was thrilled by how many boxes it checked, value included. Is it among the hotels in Amsterdam center? Check! It's on a main tram line that runs to central station. It's just down the street from the Amsterdam Museum, and it's less than 5 minutes away from the Dam and Royal Palace. And nearly all the places on our list ofAmsterdam's best foodie spots are also just a short walk away. Perfect!
Searching for your Amsterdam museum fix? Welcome to the Amsterdam Tulip Museum!
I used to think that Ottawa held the prize for being utterly tulip obsessed. Our Tulip Festival is an annual rite of passage to celebrate our survival through winter and the long anticipated arrival of spring. But our tulip obsession is downright subdued compared to what you'll find in Amsterdam! I had long known that tulips were the national symbol of The Netherlands but nothing could prepare me for just how tulip-mad people are in Amsterdam. If you're looking for a unique, one of a kind Amsterdam museum, you're going to love the Amsterdam Tulip Museum.
