Communists, Canyons, Cactus, and Colours: A Las Vegas Photo Essay

7/4/2014

There's as much to see off the strip as there is on the strip.

Las Vegas is one of the most photographed cities in the world and the famous landmarks of The Strip are instantly recognizable. But Las Vegas has much more to offer than casinos and hotels and I hope my photographs capture the unique beauty of this fascinating city.

That Freemont Street must be really really feel like on another planet.
Would love to visit Las Vegas one day...

All of Vegas is a bit of another planet! It's such an artificial city in the midst of such incredible, unspoiled nature. Vegas can be a bit overwhelming but when you balance it out with the zen-like desert it makes it much more manageable.

Love the picture of the Tiffany's Diner. One of my favourite memories of road trips were eating in places like that. It's great to know old fashioned diners exist like that in Vegas.

Isn't Tiffany's great! They do an amazing breakfast!

I love/hate Las Vegas! It's such an overwhelming circus, but you did the right thing by getting off the Strip!

More love/hate for Vegas! Even a short visit should include an off-strip excursion.

Vegas baby! Great article, the lights of Fremont street are always stuck in my head. Vegas is really one of those weird places in the US you can go and have a completely different experience every single time.

Such a good point - even if someone had a bad first trip to Vegas, they could go back and have a totally different experience the second time around and they would love it.

Such vivid colours! I think I would enjoy Vegas, even though the attraction I most wanted to see -- The Liberace Museum -- has closed down. The Nuclear Test Museum looks like my kind of place, even with the scary mannequin.

Did you really order a Western Omelet at that diner, or was it a Vanessa Omelet?

Vanessa

It was indeed a Vanessa Omelet - for those that don't know, this is a Western minus meat and cheese - just onions and green peppers!!

It is a shame about the Liberace museum - it was such a unique attraction.
